Description

We will replicate retrospective observational studies in critical care, across several publicly available datasets worldwide. Students from diverse backgrounds are invited to participate, learn together, and collaboratively work on reproduction studies with experienced researchers. Informed by the experiences of these initial replications, we aim to develop an open reproduction pipeline for retrospective observational studies in critical care to facilitate and streamline future replication attempts.

The summer school will be hosted by the Institute of Medical Informatics at Charité in collaboration with the Student Network for Open Science

Background

Reproduction studies are an integral part of the scientific method. Ideally, reproducibility and generalizability of published findings should be assessed continuously and across a broad range of healthcare settings, highlighting the need for a streamlined process of performing such studies. The interdisciplinary field of critical care has pioneered open data and code among medical specialities.

This setting creates an almost ideal framework to reproduce studies across datasets from different populations and healthcare settings.

What’s the goal of the Summer School & Hackathon?

  1. Learn about reproducibility, retrospective observational research, Open Science, and much more.
  2. Collaboratively replicate a set of retrospective cohort studies in critical care.
  3. Bring together driven students, medical doctors, data scientists, and early-career researchers, from diverse backgrounds who are committed to Open Science and reproducibility.

This project will not only contribute to the quality and rigour of research in critical care, providing important clinical implications, but also reduce the time-burden of future replication studies sustainably, and may serve as a blueprint for other fields.

Timeline

Outline of a (hybrid) day during the hackathon:

09.00 – 09.20Outlook for the working phaseInformation on what the to-dos are that have to be achieved on this day. Input sessions dependent on the wishes and expectations stated during day one of the participants.
09.30 – 15.00Working phase (flexible)
15.00 – 16.00Discussion, Check-outPresentation and discussion of the results from the working phase. Room for open questions or problems to be answered and solved.

Requirements

  • Basic (Python or R) programming knowledge
  • Time commitment for the entirety of the project (summer school + asynchronous working phase)
  • Computer with stable internet connection
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Interest in (Open) Science
